UPGRADE: MANLEY SLAM!
Digital Versions only 1/1/2006
PURPOSE: To add cooling fans to Manley SLAM Digital Version
so the converter board does not overheat.
Serial numbers for units that will benefit from this update
are:
SLAM
000-273 that have a "D" suffix which had the factory-installed Digital I/O card
installed before 11/17/2006.
MMSLAM 000-036D that have a "D" suffix which had the factory-installed Digital I/O card
installed before 11/17/2006.
ANALOG ONLY UNITS ARE NOT AFFECTED.
DIGITAL SLAMS
SHIPPED AFTER 1/1/2006 ALREADY HAVE THE FAN KIT INSTALLED.
UPDATE KIT INCLUDES:
a)
ONE FAN KIT ready to install
b)
Instructions and drawings for procedure
TOOLS REQUIRED:
a)
Phillips #1 screwdriver
b)
Soldering Iron and Solder, and ability to solder.
PROCEDURE to ADD the FAN KIT:
CAUTION!! The
Digital card is sensitive to static electricity. Make sure to handle the card
properly by grounding yourself touching the chassis of the unit or other
grounded equipment
before handling any static sensitive devices.
1.
Turn off the SLAM!’s Outboard Power Supply. Leave unit to discharge for
5 minutes.
2.
Leave the power connector hooked up from the audio chassis to the PSU.
Also, leave the AC mains power cord plugged into to the wall. This will keep the
unit
grounded to the wall so that static electricity will go to earth instead of
going to harm
to static sensitive devices.
3.
Again, make sure power is turned OFF at the Outboard Power Supply!
4.
Remove the 2 Phillips countersunk screws securing the top grill cover.
Remove the top
cover by sliding it out towards the back. Put cover and screws aside.
5.
Locate the green Digital board in the center of the SLAM! audio chassis.
See picture below:
6.
Remove the 4 x phillips screws at each corner holding the digital card. Make note of the solder lug under
the front left mounting
screw and the ground wire attached to it. Move it aside for now.
Turn the green converter card over on its side towards the left.
7.
The digital card is mounted on four posts (two-piece spacers).
Three of the posts have a smaller plastic spacer-screw in the top
of the metal posts.
Only the one towards the front left corner has a small metal
spacer-screw in the top to sandwich
the grounding wire. Remove the short spacer-screws in each of the two
front posts,
the left-front one is metal and the right-front one is plastic.
8. The fan kit comes ready to fit onto
the two front posts.
Mount the fan kit on top of the two metal front posts, oriented as shown
below:

9. Put the ground wire lug sandwiched
between the bottom post and the fankit
mounting bracket. Reinstall the left metal small spacer-screw. As
below:

10. Reinstall the right plastic
spacer-screw onto the mounting post and right side of fan kit
mounting bracket as shown below:

9. Now return the digital card to its original position
and screw the green
digital card back onto the spacers.

10. There are two wires coming
from the fan kit that must be soldered to the heater supply, a black and a
red wire.
We will obtain the voltages to run the fan from Pins 4 & 5 of the
right channel's output tube (6414).
That is the tube at the right rear of the unit.
Look at the pictures below to locate where you are going to solder these
two wires.

If you pull the 6414 tube out and look at the socket
from the top, you will see that there is a wider gap between pins 1
and 9.
This point is called the locator KEY. Starting at the key, and
looking from above the tube socket, count the pins counter-clockwise
from pin 1 to locate pins 4 & 5.
The Red wire goes to pin 5 (+6vdc).
The Black wire goes to pin 4 (–6vdc). |

10.
Put the top back onto the unit by sliding it into the side rails from the
back and popping it into
the front panel slot. Secure it with the two silver
Phillips #1 countersunk screws.
That’s
it! No further adjustments or calibrations are necessary. Now when you turn on
your SLAM!
the fans will run and keep the digital board cooler by moving some air.
Be advised that if you do not leave some space around
the unit that you won't be achieving any air flow.
So please give the SLAM! at least a rack space above it so that the hot air can
be
pushed away out of the unit.
